One night as I was leaving Chicago’s O’Hare airport, I had to decide whether I would take my scheduled flight—which was late—or a flight that would get me home thirty minutes earlier. After silently praying, I decided to take the scheduled flight, which by this late hour was almost empty. An engineer bound for my hometown settled in next to me and asked, “What do you do?” When I told him I was a minister, I thought he would jump off the plane! But within twenty minutes he turned to me again. “Explain something to me. My brother-in-law has been telling me that he has been ‘born again.’ You are a theologian. What does he mean?” Long before we reached our destination, this engineer prayed to receive Christ. Thank God I read the road sign of that “still, small voice” that caused me to select the slowest way home.

That is what the Word means when it says, “He shall direct your paths” or “[He] will guide you with [His] eye” (Prov. 3:6b; Ps. 32:8b NKJV). He “nudges” our spirit or “impresses” our spirit or “broadens” our heart. Such inclinations are usually the Holy Spirit within.

D. L. Moody used to say something to this effect: When you get a “burden” to do something that doesn’t violate the Scriptures, it is the will of God.

The Spirit’s guidance will always coincide with God’s Word. The Holy Spirit wrote the Word, inspiring His servants to transcribe it. Therefore we can be certain that He will not lead us in ways that are contrary to it. In many instances He brings Scripture to mind just when we need it in making decisions.
